CHENNAI : Summer holidays are when children start developing hobbies and interests. For some it is reading and sports while others want to try out something new. Vikram, a 12-year-old, has an interest in aeromodelling.Aeromodelling is building and flying a model aircraft, using a variety of materials like paper, plastic or wood.For Vikram it is a passion. His aim is to become a pilot. “Even during my free time I check out aircraft online. I even buy small model aircraft to fly at home,” he said.Aeromodelling is a costly hobby. “Although it is expensive, it gives knowledge and skills in a lot of other subjects like electronics, aero dynamics and mechanical engineering,” said S Parthasarathy, director Bharath Electronic Centre, Madurai.Learning to fly a model aircraft is tough but kids who are really interested don’t find it that hard. “I started learning at the age of 7. It took me two months to master this art and now I can fly all kinds of model aircraft,” said Adithya, a 13-year-old boy.While some children are interested in flying, others are interested in construction and design. “I just heard about aeromodelling and want to try it out,” said Veena R.The Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre is holding a three-day workshop on aeromodelling from May 28 to 30 at Periyar Science and Technology Centre, Gandhimandapam Road. The institution charges `750 per person for participation.
