CHENNAI: The Sweden-India Nobel Memorial Quiz 2011 was held for the first time in thecity at the Indian Institute of Technology - Madras (IIT-M). Conducted bythe Embassy of Sweden since 2007, the aim of the quiz is to showcase Swedish industries and culture to the students.Quiz master Adittya Nath Mubayi covered the topics of Alfred Nobel, Nobel prize winners and Sweden, and the questions thoroughly tested the participants' knowledge. Sweden's geography (the country's largest lake), Nobel's inventions (other than dynamite) and Scandinavian legends (who are the handmaidens of Odin who escort warriors to Valhalla) were a few examples of the preliminary questions, a written round with 20 text and five audio-visual questions.Six teams made it to the finals - Velammal Engineering College, IIT-M, St. Joseph's College of Engineering, Vellore Institute of Technology - Chennai campus, National Institute of Technology - Trichy and College of Engineering - Guindy - to fight it out for an all-expense paid trip to Sweden. This includes visits and chances for interning at the various partner companies sponsoring the event.The audience had their chance to answer questions throughout the six rounds of the finals, and were rewarded for their enthusiastic participation. The team from IIT-M won the first place, beating CEG Guindy by three points, VIT Chennai was placed third.
