CHENNAI: The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Chennai, in association with the Directorate of Handloom and Textiles, is on the verge of completing a design development project that would provide handlooms in clusters such as Coimbatore, Virudhunagar, Dindigul and Erode with 700 modern and marketable design templates for sarees and home furnishing fabrics, Minister for Handlooms and Textiles B V Ramanaa said here on Wednesday. Inaugurating a technical seminar at the NIFT marking its 25th anniversary celebrations, he said it had become a necessity for the handloom sector to modernise and constantly upgrade its technology to meet the challenges of globalisation. Such a process alone would aid them in meeting the changing market requirements, he said. Hailing the NIFT for its services to the sector, the handlooms and textiles minister said the faculty and students have rendered their expertise to the industry by constantly providing marketable designs. The government was also providing credible infrastructure support to help weavers to face the demand. Director of NIFT, Chennai, S Devadoss said the institute would soon have additional hostels and multiple activity centres at the land allocated by the government. Funds to the tune of `39 crore has already been set aside by the Centre for the infrastructure needs.
