CHENNAI: Over a hundred stone memorials that were sculpted in the shape of animals were unearthed at an excavation site near Sriperumbudur, by a team from a Kancheepuram varsity. According to Professor Ramakrishna Pisupathy from the Department of Indian Culture at Chandrasekharendra Saraswathy Viswa Mahavidyalaya, “All the memorial stones that we unearthed are believed to be early Iron Age megalithic memorials and are approximately 3,000 years old.” He also said that the excavation site near Vadamanagalam, was on land owned by the forest department and they had first done some digging two years ago.“This time we began our excavation on February 15 and we were lucky to find so many memorial sculptures this quickly,” he added. Most of the sculptures were those of a tortoise and a few other reptiles and were over 25 metres tall. There is a possibility of there being many more such sculptures in the vicinity, he added. When asked what civilisation these sculptures could possibly be traced back to, he declined to comment as it was too early to make any assumptions. He said that it most likely to be from a group of nomadic tribes.
