KOCHI: As part of beefing up the security both on waterfront and on land in the wake of the growing all-round threat perceptions, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has decided to deploy 200 CISF personnel additionally to the Kochi Port.According to sources, currently the security system in the port is well maintained and as a result no untoward incident has been reported in the area. However, in the wake of new projects coming up, the security system will be beefed up with the CISF deploying additional 200 personnel in the area. “With more than 1000 ships arriving at the Kochi Port in a year, the security has to be good and the port has taken several initiatives in this regard. Currently the CISF has a unit with 400 security personnel, which overlook the security of the port as well as that of the Vallarpadam Container Terminal. But with increasing number of activities at the Port, 200 security personal will be deployed additionally in the area. The report about the requirement was sent and approval has been given,” said sources at the port. There were also plans to set up a specialised CISF marine security wing on the lines of the existing airport security unit, which will be capable of handling every emergency. CISF men trained in these security systems will be retained for longer periods and exempted from periodic transfers, as their training involved long drawn exercises.“The additional force is being deployed as part of the newly inducted Vallarpadam project and the Puthuvypeen project. Foreseeing the requirement we have asked the home ministry for additional personnel to be allotted for the port. The current maritime security is conducted by the Coast Guard, but the CISF’s specialised marine security wing for handling any kind of emergency will replace it soon. The security in the port is very tight and with additional force, we can implement three tier security system to monitor the Port, Vallarpadam and Puthuvypeen at the same time.” G KrishnaKumar, deputy chairman, Kochi Port Trust said.
