What do you mean, south Indians don't only eat idlis and dosas? And we have NEVER heard of a small-scale Punjabi wedding.
Many cross cultural stereotypes like the ones mentioned above, are the chocolate filling in a warm, light croissant that is Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor's dramedy '2 States'.
Based on Chetan Bhagat's best selling novel on the same name, the film boasts of several hilarious cultural stereotypes throughout its narrative, but never does it get on the offensive, or even the uncomfortable side.
*spoilers ahead*
Here are a few examples:
The Dilliwalas and the Punjabbis (yes, two Bs for that jolly inflection)
1) All Punjabi mothers are obsessed with feeding their children.
2) When any of the north Indians go abroad, they get a firangi pet name. In the film, the protagonist's cousin is called 'Duke'.
3) North Indian girls have names like, Minty, Dolly, Bittu, Pinky, etc.
4) North Indian mothers are attracted to shiny objects. (jewellery, new clothes, fancy cars, etc)
5) North Indians think a hanging garden is where people are hanged to death.
The Madrasis (Yes. It doesn't matter what state you belong to. If you speak with a south Indian accent, you're a Madrasi.)
1) "90% of Tamilians are cultured and well-educated."
2) All south Indians have a button that enables them to break into a perfectly choreographed Bharatanatyam/Kuchipudi dance.
3) South Indians only eat in banana leaves. Especially when they have company.
4) All south Indians listen to Carnatic music and are fond of the Lungi.
5) All south Indians are dark-skinned.
The film has been directed by Abhishek Varman and produced by Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala. '2 States' also features Ronit Roy, Amrita Singh, Shiv Kumar Subramaniam and Revathy in important roles.
