2 call centre workers killed in road mishap

Two persons were killed and three others injured in a road accident near Kirumambakkam here early on Wednesday morning.

The deceased were identified as Vinothkumar (23) and Sakthi (24). Both were call centre employees hailing from Cuddalore.

The injured were Samy (35) from Villupuram,  Satheesh (24) and Manigandan (25), both from Cuddalore. The injured were admitted to the Government General Hospital.

Kirumambakkam Rural Traffic police said the maxi-cab driven by Sami was transporting the private call centre staff from Cuddalore to Puducherry when it hit a sand-laden bullock cart from behind. The cab took a turn under the impact and the door was flung open. Vinothkumar and Sakthi were thrown to the road and run over by a lorry, bound for Karaikal. Both were killed on the spot.

Traffic on the stretch was affected for nearly two hours. Police suspect that the cab driver could not see the bullock cart which had no lights or signals to alert drivers. A case was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by the bullock cart owner Raman following which the rural traffic police arrested Hyder Ali, the lorry driver, who belongs to Rajampet in Andhra Pradesh.
