KEMPEGOWDA: Kempegowda Ward is one of the newly added wards to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Earlier, the ward was under City Municipal Council of Yelahanka. Yelahanka Old Town, Maruthi Nagar, Surabhi Layout, Suggappa Layout and Venkatala are some of the important areas in Kempegowda Ward, represented by Y N Aswath. The BBMP had allocated Rs 8 crore to undertake various development projects in this ward. There was acute shortage for drinking water in most of the areas. The water was being supplied once in 15 days. “Now, we dug 12 bore wells to supply drinking water. Now, we are able to supply water once in two days for many years. There are a few areas where there is acute shortage for drinking water. For example, the residents of Maruthinagar get drinking water only once in two weeks,” explains Y N Aswath, Corporator.Though the residents are happy with the developmental projects taken by the BBMP, there is an urgent need to construct an electric crematorium at Hindu burial ground near Raithara Santhe. “We have been demanding the BBMP to construct an electric crematorium. Many years ago, the then City Municipal Council had purchased equipment for the electric crematorium. The irony was that they bought the equipment without constructing a structure for the electric crematorium,” says A B Shivakumar, resident of KHB Colony. Many feel that construction of a bus shelter at Kogilu junction will be a great help for people waiting for buses. “One can imagine our plight in summer and monsoon seasons. I request the BBMP or BMTC to construct a bus shelter for the benefit of commuters who wait for buses at this junction,” demands Shanakarappa of Maruthinagar. The BBMP engineer claims that an overhead tank was constructed to store water near Venkatala and more than 60 houses were constructed for the betterment poor families under Rs 22.75 per cent scheme’. However, many complain that the BBMP authorities fail to take measures to supply water on alternate days. “I am not expecting them to supply water on regular basis. But water was not supplied for the last 15 days. They have not taken measures to repair a damaged water pipes,” complains H Anasuya, a resident of Maruthinagar.Agreeing with the residents of Kempegowda Ward, Corporator Aswath said,”we have been demanding BBMP to take measures to supply Cauvery water and also construct two under passes - one near railway station and the other at the Airport Road junction. Our focus will be to mitigate water woes in the ward,” says Aswath.
