New Delhi: Life has not changed much for Hyderabad wicketkeeper Ibrahim Khaleel, who has set a new record in first-class cricket by effecting 14 dismissals in a match, against Assam.
Khaleel on Sunday claimed the world record for most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in a first class game as he snared 14 victims (11 catches and 3 stumpings) in Hyderabad’s Ranji Trophy Plate Division match in Guwahati.
The previous mark of 13 dismissals was set by Zimbabwe’s Wayne James, who claimed 11 catches and effected two stumpings when playing for Matabeleland against Mashonaland in 1995-96.
“Actually when the match ended (Hyderabad won by an innings and 78 runs) we all thought that it was an Indian record. But then we checked the internet and saw that it’s a record in first-class cricket.
“Feels good that I would be associated with something that would make me feel proud as a cricketer,” Khaleel said.
But the 29-year-old was quick to point out that life has not changed much after the record.
“I got a congratulatory message from my Hyderabad and India teammate Pragyan Ojha. It felt nice and a few more congratulatory calls. Nothing much and I don’t think life would change much because of one performance,” he said.
The Hyderabad team has been in the news for all the wrong reasons, being shot out for 21 against Rajasthan last season and 54 against Maharashtra this season but Khaleel feels that things will change.
“Definitely, we had some disappointing outings but hope my performance and the big win changes things for us. But we have also created some records like highest runs in one innings of Ranji Trophy (over 900).”
Khalee lost out on two precious years by moving to the Indian Cricket League (ICL) but does not regret the move.
“That was a decision I took then and no point thinking about it now. I have moved on in life. I play the game because I enjoy it and not for anything else.”
He had a contract with the Mumbai Indians for a season but unfortunately for Khaleel it was not extended.
“I know at times it’s difficult for domestic players but can’t really lose sleep over not getting an IPL contract,” he said.
