How to Catch a Shiny Haxorus: A Foolproof Tutorial
How to Catch a Shiny Haxorus: A Foolproof Tutorial
Become the Pokémon Champion? Check. Complete your Unova Pokédex? Check. You’ve conquered most of the challenges Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2 have to offer… except for catching a shiny Haxorus, that is! Thankfully, no tedious hours of shiny hunting are required to catch this illustrious Pokémon—all you need is a strong Pokémon team. We’ll walk you through every step you need to know, so you can capture this shiny Dragon-type Pokémon for yourself in no time.
Things You Should Know
  • Complete the Unova Pokédex and speak with Professor Juniper in Nuvema Town.
  • Find the shiny Haxorus in the Nature Preserve via Mistralton City.
  • Catch the shiny Haxorus with moves like False Swipe and use a high-quality Pokéball to capture it.

Become the Pokémon Champion.

Beat the Elite 4 as well as the Pokémon Champion. Before you can find the shiny Haxorus, you’ll need to collect all 8 Unova Gym Badges, beat the Elite 4, and defeat the Pokémon Champion. Find these competitors on the north end of Victory Road—just be prepared to battle some trainers along the way! As a refresher, the Elite 4 include Shauntal, a Ghost-type expert; Grimsley, a Dark-type expert; Caitlin, a Psychic-type expert; and Marshall, a Fighting-type expert. Pokémon Champion Iris is a Dragon-type expert. Expect to fight a level 57 Hydreigon (Dark/Dragon), a level 57 Druddigon (Dragon), a level 57 Archeops (Rock/Flying), a level 57 Aggron (Steel/Rock), a level 57 Lapras (Water/Ice), and a level 59 Haxorus (Dragon).

Complete the Unova Pokédex.

Make sure that you’ve crossed paths with all 297 Pokémon in the Pokédex. To complete this Pokédex, you only need to see—not capture—all 297 Pokémon in the wild. This doesn’t include Keldeo, Genesect, Victini, or Meloetta, which are all Event-exclusive Pokémon.

Visit Professor Juniper.

Professor Juniper can be found at the Pokémon lab in Nuvema Town. Head to the town you started the game in—just north of your childhood home, you’ll find Professor Juniper’s lab. Speak with the Professor and show her your completed Pokédex; in return, she’ll give you a Permit, which allows you to enter the Nature Preserve again.

Go to Mistralton City and fly to the Nature Preserve.

The shiny Haxorus spawns in the middle of this Nature Preserve. Use Fly to get to the city directly, or reach the city via Route 7. Then, enter the Cargo Service building and talk to the person behind the counter. Present the Permit to automatically be flown to the Nature Preserve. The Cargo Service building is just northwest of the city’s Pokémon Center.

Find Haxorus in the Nature Preserve.

Look for a black sprite sitting in the middle of a tree clearing. When you land, start on the left edge of the Preserve. Walk down to the bottom of the screen, past the plane—then, walk to the right. Go up through the opening in the trees; after a few moments of walking, find Haxorus sitting in the center of a clearing.

Save your game and adjust your team.

Saving allows you to redo the battle infinitely if anything goes wrong. Pull up the main menu in your Pokémon game and hit the “Save” option. At this point, make any necessary changes to your roster. It’s ideal to have a Pokémon on your team that knows the “False Swipe” move, which allows you to safely lower Haxorus’s health without knocking it out. Don’t have False Swipe? You can pick it up from a Pokémon researcher on Reversal Mountain. Haxorus is level 60. Chances are, your current team is more than strong enough to defeat the Pokémon without any issues—the main challenge will be not knocking it out.

Start the fight.

Walk up to the Haxorus and hit A to start the battle. Pay attention to the sparkles on the Pokémon at the beginning of the battle—this is proof that the Haxorus is indeed shiny. Hit the Haxorus with a few powerful hits to get the majority of its health down, being careful not to KO it in the process. Once its health is low, hit it with False Swipes until it’s down to 1 HP. Moves that immobilize the Haxorus (like Sleep or Paralyze) can make it easier to capture.

Catch the shiny Haxorus.

Use status-effecting moves and strong Pokéballs to capture the dragon. Once the Haxorus is at 1 HP (and possibly incapacitated), use the best Pokéballs you have on hand to catch it, like Ultra Balls. Keep in mind that it might take a few tries before you successfully make the capture!

What's your reaction?
