Indian Oil Corporation defend Murugappa Hockey title
Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) Mumbai came from behind to defend their title after edging past Army XI 3-2 in the final of the 89th All India MCC Murugappa Hockey Tournament on Sunday.

Chennai: Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) Mumbai came from behind to defend their title after edging past Army XI 3-2 in the final of the 89th All India MCC Murugappa Hockey Tournament on Sunday.

Army forward Pawal Lakra hit the target in the very fourth minute but Hzamsa Mujthaba of Indian Oil drew level in the 15th minute. Crossing over, Indian Oil went in to the lead in the 48th minute through Deepak Thakur (48) and then Didar Singh scored in the 55th minute.

Down by 1-3, Army fought back gallantly and managed to reduce the margin to 2-3 in the 65 minute through Chandan Aind. The last five minutes of the game was even but the Oilmen regrouped well to defend their citadel.

Thakur was rightly adjudged as the Man of the final tie and also was declared as best forward of the tournament.

Karnataka's Pradan Somanna got the best mid fielkder award and best defender award went to Chandan Singh of the CAG.

Vinay Arupp Valmiki was selected the most promising player.

As the winning team, Indian Oil Corporation takes home the prize money of Rs 5 lakhs, and the runner-up team Army XI receives Rs 2 lakhs.
