The 25-year-old retaliated to an abuse on the social networking site.

Manchester: Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney was involved in a Twitter row on Tuesday night after being threatened by one of his followers.

The 25-year-old forward, whose penalty against Blackburn Rovers secured a record breaking 19th league title for United, was abused on the social networking site.

The England striker responded to the insult by challenging him to meet him at United's training ground, Carrington.

"I will put you asleep within 10 seconds hope you turn up if you don't gonna tell everyone you are scared you little nit. I'll be waiting," he wrote.

However, the England striker did then try to calm the situation by insisting the exchange was just 'banter'.

"Haha bit of banter and people go nuts chill all people," he added.

His effort to diffuse the quarrel seemed to work, with the Twitter account of the user who threatened him now having been deleted.

What's your reaction?
