Memphis Depay's Contract May Be Terminated By Corinthians Due to Possible 'Criminal Activity': Reports
The Dutchman may just have his contract terminated, or would have to play out his two years unpaid, due to a potential salary issue.

A twisted turn of events may unfold for Memphis Depay, as his new club, Corinthians, may just terminate the Dutch winger’s contract within just a month of him arriving at the club.

The former Manchester United and Barcelona forward left his previous club Atletico Madrid, for whom he played 31 times and scored nine goals last season, this summer.

Depay then signed a two-year contract with Corinthians until December 2026, after he left the Wanda Metropolitano as a free agent.

But, now it seems as if the Dutchman may just have his contract terminated, or would have to play out his two years unpaid, due to a potential salary issue.

According to multiple reports, most of Depay’s salary was supposed to come from a club sponsor — a betting company. However, Brazilian authorities have recently denied the gambling company a state license, meaning that funding for Corinthians, including Depay’s contract woth $12 million per year, is now uncertain and could face major hurdles.

If the betting company is unable to clear their legal issues, then it is possible that Corinthians may lose out upwards of 51.3 million Euros from their sponsorship agreements, and would also ultimately lose out paying Depay his salary.

This doesn’t neccessarily mean that Depay will be forced to leave the club. But, this would signify that the club would be expected to find new sponsors in time to ensure that they retain the services of teh Dutchman.

The 30-year-old featured for the Netherlands at Euro 2024 this summer but he was left out of the squad by head coach Ronald Koeman for September’s Nations League matches.

Given Koeman’s disregard for players succumbing to financial greed, it may take a while for Depay to possibly get into his Dutch boss’ good books again.

Depay started his career at PSV Eindhoven in 2011 and later had spells at Manchester United, Lyon and Barcelona before joining Atletico Madrid in 2023.

He made his Netherlands debut in 2013 and has scored 46 goals in 98 appearances.
