Manchester Derby In Jeopardy After Severe Weather Warning By Met Office

Ahead of the much awaited Manchester derby, fans are being asked to reach Old Trafford early on Sunday evening after the Met Office issued a weather warning that predicts snowfall in the build up to the game. The severe weather could also lead to the match being postponed.

There is a high chance of heavy snowfall – up to eight inches is predicted in the hours before the game.

Even the Manchester Airport has issued a warning asking people to budget more time on their journeys on Sunday due to the severe weather warnings.

The Met Office updated their initial warning from yellow to amber as they fear that snow fall between 4am and 6pm across Greater Manchester, along with sub-zero temperatures, could result in safety concerns and cause to traffic chaos.

"A spell of heavy snow is likely over parts of Wales, the Midlands and parts of Northern England on Sunday," the Met Office's warning said.

"Road, rail and air travel delays are likely, as well as stranding of vehicles and public transport cancellations. There is a chance that some rural communities could become cut off."

Manchester United noted on their website that "supporters with long distance journeys are advised to plan routes before travelling," and encouraged fans to arrive early.

The Manchester derby between United and City kicks off at 4.30pm, but both clubs and the police have urged their supporters to arrive well in time as the weather is likely to disrupt public transport systems during the already busy Christmas season.

High security will also be in place at Old Trafford where fans are being encouraged to avoid bringing bags if possible.

The gates open 120 minutes before kick-off with 3,000 plus City fans asked to arrive at least an hour before the game is due to start to go through the process of security checks.

Along with that, Manchester United who brought down the price of alcohol inside Old Trafford to encourage arriving at the ground early, will restrict fans to only two drinks per visit to the concourse bars.

There is a chance that the weather will also affect the Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton which is earlier in the day.
