German World Cup-winning goalkeeper Manuel Neuer announced his retirement from international football on Wednesday.

The 38-year-old shot-stopper played 124 matches for Germany, captaining his country 61 times. He was crucial to the national side’s World Cup triumph in the year 2014.

The custodian, who redefined the art of goalkeeping, played his final game for the national side at the Euro 2024, in which hosts Germany lost to eventual winners Spain in the quarterfinal fixture.

Neuer took to the social media platform Instagram to announce his decision with a heartfelt post that read, “Dear fans, dear football Germany, after over 15 years and 124 national games, my career in the German national football team ends today.”

“Anyone who knows me, knows that I didn’t make this decision lightly. After many intense and long discussions with my family and friends, I have decided that right now is the right time to close my chapter in the National Eleven,” the post continued.

“Looking back today, I am filled with pride and gratitude!”

“For a total of 7 years and 61 games, I was allowed – up to my injury – to lead the German national team as captain on the field. An honour that I appreciated anew every time,” he added.

“This year’s home European Championship was another highlight, even if it unfortunately wasn’t enough for the title, because every second I felt a very special euphoria and cohesion all over the country,” the post continued.

“Let’s keep that in mind! Many thanks to all the staff, supervisors, coaches and also fellow players who have supported me since my debut in the national team on 02. Joined June 2009!”

“And I especially want to thank you, dear fans, for supporting me all these years! I loved wearing the national team jersey,” the shot-stopper concluded.

The custodian made his Bundesliga debut with Schalke before making the switch to Bayern Munich in the year 2011, where he plays currently.
