New Delhi: East Bengal beat Delhi XI 1-0 in an exhibition match here at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Tuesday, with the lone goal-scorer Seiminlenn Doungel's brilliant right-footer in the 82nd minute of the match securing visitors the win.
The match, organised by the Vinay Nagar Bengali School - whose association with football includes healthy relations with the AIFF, SAI, DSA and Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sport - to celebrate their diamond jubilee year, saw an East Bengal fielding a team mostly consisting their Under-19 players apart from four seniors.
Delhi XI dominated the first half with many chances coming their way but failed to convert any of those. From 0-0 at half time, East Bengal picked themselves up to dominate completely and Doungel broke the deadlock with eight minutes of regulation time left on the clock.
"I am in the senior team but still I am here to play. I also can learn from them," Doungel said after the match. East Bengal captain Saikat Saha Ray was pretty happy with the win. "It feels good to win; whenever East Bengal play, they play to win," he said.
East Bengal's actual coach Trevor Morgan was not present, with assistant coach Tarun Dey travelling with the team in Morgan's absence. Dey, however, was criticial of AIFF for not having enough U-19 football tournaments. "AIFF has told every club to have an Under-19 team but they do not organise enough tournaments for them," he said.
