Pizza is one of the most loved dishes all over the world. It is almost impossible to find someone who dislikes pizza and we can understand why. No matter how unhealthy it is, the addictive combination of the crispy crust made of flour (maida), tangy tomato sauce and melted mozzarella cheese is enough to make you crave a big slice.
Despite how much you love the Italian dish, it’s important to take care of your health too. No, we’re not asking you to quit but how about trying a healthy pizza?
You can prepare a healthy and tasty pizza at your home not with flour but with lentils (Masoor Dal). Taking to Instagram, Dominique Ludwig, a Nutritionist recently shared a red-lentil base pizza recipe.

As per the nutritionist, the red lentil pizza base is “high in protein, high in fibre, isn’t going to feel stodgy or heavy, is completely gluten-free and is going to make you feel fantastic.”
Take a look at the healthy red-lentil base pizza recipe shared by the nutritionist:
Ingredients:
- Red Lentils
- Water
- Sea Salt
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Olive Oil
- Baking Powder
- Psyllium Husk, or as we say Isabgol.
How to prepare?
- Take some red lentils and wash them properly. Drain the excess water and add it to a mixer.
- Blend it for a few minutes till you see a slightly thick paste kind of structure.
- After that, add some water, sea salt, Rosemary (for some flavour), Apple cider vinegar, Olive oil, Baking powder and Psyllium husk to the mixture.
- Blend it again and let it rest for a few minutes.
- Next up, take a baking tray and place a baking paper on it. Gently spread the lentil mixture on the tray and spread it equally with the help of a spoon.
- For the topping: Instead of using tomatoes, brush it with some wild garlic and green pesto.
- Next, top it off with some vegetables of your choice (like olives, bell peppers, courgettes or others).
- Put some mozzarella cheese in small pieces and let it bake in the oven till it gets golden brown.
As per the nutritionist, there are several benefits of replacing the flour pizza base with lentils:
- It’s completely gluten-free.
- It doesn’t need proving (but the red lentils do need soaking for a couple of hours, or overnight).
- It’s higher in protein and fibre.
- It leaves you feeling lighter than regular pizza.
- It’s a fantastic option to give pizza a nutrition upgrade.
