The University of Allahabad, a prestigious central public institution in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, boasts an illustrious alumni list including Prime Ministers, Chief Ministers and Presidents such as Vishwanath Pratap Singh, Chandrashekhar, Gulzarilal Nanda, Shankar Dayal Sharma and Govind Ballabh Pant. On April 27 and 28, the university is set to host its first comprehensive alumni meeting, encompassing graduates from 1996 to the present year, signalling a momentous occasion. Over 1100 alumni have registered to participate in this historic event.
Professor Srivastava revealed that the alumni meet aims to provide a platform for former students to share insights into their university experiences and how those formative years shaped their professional journeys. Alongside these enlightening discussions, a variety of cultural programs will be organised over the two-day event. The focal point of the gathering will be the main event at the open stage of Banyan Lawn in the Senate Hall complex, while an exhibition will run concurrently at the Nirala Art Gallery.
Participants can look forward to on-the-spot sketches and indulge in a delectable food festival featuring Allahabadi delicacies at the Nirala Kala Gram. Distinguished alumni such as former Reserve Bank of India director Deepali Pant Joshi, acclaimed author and academician Neelam Sharan Gaur, former Lok Sabha general secretary Subhash C Kashyap and former Rajya Sabha general secretary Yogendra Narain are expected to grace the occasion, as announced by the Vice President. Additionally, some Supreme Court judges who are alumni of the university will also be in attendance.
The alumni gathering offers a unique opportunity for former students to reconnect with their alma mater, with arrangements made for them to visit their respective departments and hostels. All departments and major centres on campus will remain open during the event on Saturday and Sunday, ensuring alumni have ample opportunities to reminisce and reconnect. Furthermore, alumni will have the chance to explore the iconic Sangam area, with 10 boats stationed at the Sangam bank for guided tours.
Established on September 23, 1887, by an act of Parliament, the University of Allahabad holds the distinction of being recognised as an Institute of National Importance (INI). Renowned as one of the oldest modern universities in India, it has earned the moniker “Oxford of the East” for its rich academic legacy and contributions to the nation’s intellectual landscape.
