JNU Violence: ABVP, Left Groups Clash Over Election Committee, Students Injured
The incident, triggered by disputes over the selection of election committee members at the School of Languages, escalated into violence on Thursday night

A clash erupted at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi, involving members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Left-backed groups (JNUSU), resulting in injuries to several students. The incident, triggered by disputes over the selection of election committee members at the School of Languages, escalated into violence on Thursday night, leading to the hospitalization of affected students, as per university officials.

Several videos circulated on social media depicted a man wielding a stick to attack students, and another person throwing a bicycle amid chaotic scenes. Additional videos suggested individuals being mobbed and beaten while university security personnel attempted to intervene. The injured students were admitted to Safdarjung Hospital, according to university sources, PTI reported.

JNUSU alleges that the ABVP orchestrated an attack immediately after the student general body meeting, accusing the ABVP of attempting to manipulate the election process to undermine JNUSU’s influence. Conversely, the ABVP contends that members of the left-leaning JNUSU initiated the assault.

In response to the clash, both ABVP and Left group students filed police complaints against each other. The university administration has yet to provide an immediate response, and the exact number of injured students remains unconfirmed.

The JNU administration is committed to restoring peace on campus. Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit assured that strict action will be taken against those involved, irrespective of their political affiliations, as reported by PTI. As the altercation unfolded within the university grounds, efforts are underway to address the situation and ensure the return of normalcy to the campus environment.
