In a gripping discussion about the influence of Western media on global perceptions of India, the Centre for Media Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) gave an interesting talk titled “Western Media Ecosystem and Framing of India: Exploring the Dynamics of Propaganda.” A lecture on this pressing subject was given by notable guests Umesh Upadhyay, a senior journalist and writer, and Anand Ranganathan, a professor at JNU and public speaker. The Vice Chancellor of JNU, Professor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit, also attended the event.
Umesh Upadhyay, widely recognised for his latest work ‘Western Media Narrative on India,’shared significant insights from his painstakingly researched book. He described the book as an instrument for exposing the continuous colonisation of minds, demonstrating how the media continues to hold tremendous power in this field. Upadhyay mentioned examples from his book, such as The New York Times’ inaccurate COVID death count and Reuters’ contentious story on India’s Asian Games victory.
Anand Ranganathan, a professor at JNU’s Centre for Molecular Studies, provided light on the subject by emphasising the reciprocal link between perception and depiction in media narratives. “We believe what we see, but those who are writing are the ones who write what they believe,” Ranganathan was quoted by the press release. He advocated a change in emphasis from criticising Western narratives to challenging the credibility of Indian media.
The Centre for Media Studies’ Chairperson, Dr. Shuchi Yadav went on to emphasise the significance of assessing the media’s influence on international relations objectively. She underlined the importance of challenging Western media narratives that are biased against Indian society and culture.
Professor Kaushal Sharma, Dean of the School of Social Science, chaired the seminar and facilitated a lively debate. Professor Manukonda Rabindranath expressed gratitude to the speakers and attendees in his vote of thanks.
