An odd occurrence took place in the Jamui district of Bihar where 13 teachers had their salary withheld by the education department for absenteeism for “bed performance,” which was a typographical oversight that should have said “bad performance.” This error triggered protests from teachers’ unions, according to the Times of India.
The incident in question occurred on May 22, when education department officials performed surprise inspections at numerous Jamui schools. During these examinations, they discovered numerous teachers absent and several more functioning poorly.

A formal letter outlining the disciplinary procedures taken against the identified teachers was issued by the local district education officer (DEO) in response to these findings. However, the letter’s inaccurate use of the term “bed performance” immediately gained notice on social media, appearing to blame the department rather than the teachers.
After the letter circulated online, the DEO’s office issued an explanation. They explained the inaccuracy as a typographical error and acknowledged that the intended term was “bad performance.” Despite the correction, the mistake had already provoked criticism and condemnation from several teaching groups.
The letter detailed disciplinary actions taken against a total of 16 teachers. Specifically, three teachers were penalised for being absent during inspections, while 13 others had their salaries deducted for unsatisfactory performance.

This episode emphasises the importance of precise communication, particularly in official papers, to avoid misunderstandings and unwarranted backlash. The typographical error not only diminished the gravity of the disciplinary actions, but also drew unwanted attention to the education department itself.
