Every parent dreams of getting their children into reputed educational institutions. However, they face a major challenge to do so due to an unaffordable fee. Given the circumstances, many scholarship programmes have been introduced for school and college-going students by the government in India. These scholarship programmes provide financial assistance.
While there are several such scholarship programmes available today, some of them are only made available for girls. These are introduced and implemented to promote girl child education.
Let us take a brief look at the top five scholarships available for girl children in our country.
AICTE Pragati Scholarship
The Pragati scholarship scheme offers girls financial aid that allows them to pursue technical education from an AICTE-approved college or institution such as Engineering, Architecture, Pharmacy, or Applied Arts, among others. As per the eligibility criteria to avail of the scholarship, it abides a requirement that there should be a maximum of two daughters in the family while having a total family income of less than Rs 8lakh per annum.
Under this, the eligible female candidates are given Rs 30,000 or a tuition fee, whichever is less, and Rs 2,000 per month for ten months as extras each year.
Begum Hazrat Mahal Scholarship
Begum Hazrat Mahal Scholarship, formerly known as Maulana Azad National Scholarship is a scholarship that aims to support, promote and assist the girl students belonging to the minority community. This scholarship offers financial assistance in higher education grades, from Class 9 to Class 12.
Under the Begum Hazrat Mahal National Scholarship, eligible girl students studying in classes 9 and 10 get assistance of Rs 5,000 per month and for the class 11 and 12 students, it is Rs 6,000.
Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child
The University Grants Commission (UGC) introduced the Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child as a scheme to promote higher education. Following the grant, the eligible beneficiary gets a monthly amount of Rs 3,000 to pursue post-graduation studies in non-professional courses. However, the maximum age to apply for the scholarship is set at 30 years.
CBSE Merit Scholarship Scheme for Single Girl Child
The CBSE Merit Scholarship Scheme headed under the Ministry of Education is a programme that aims to assist single girl children. The scheme supports the ones who have passed the CBSE class 10 examination with at least 60 per cent or more.
Under the scholarship programme, the eligible girl child enrolled in the CBSE intermediate school will get a maximum of Rs 1,500 per month as tuition fees.
Women Scientist Scheme-B
Women Scientist Scheme-B is a research grant provided by the Ministry of Science and Technology for female candidates seeking financial assistance in the field of science. According to the My Scheme website, the stipend for the PhD candidate will be Rs 55,000 per month, while for the MPhil is Rs 40,000 and MSc is Rs 31,000 per month.
Apart from the stipend, the scholarship also assists through a separate HRA for the candidates with an age limit between 27 to 57.
