Former Indian cricketer Parthiv Patel seems excited to see how Yashasvi Jaiswal performs in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Jaiswal has already become a key component of the Indian Test squad. Despite having impressive numbers on Indian soil, the young opening batter is yet to demonstrate his quality in overseas conditions. He will have an opportunity to prove himself in the five-match Test series against Australia, according to Patel.
In December last year when India toured South Africa to play two Tests, Yashasvi Jaiswal managed 50 runs across four innings including a duck. Patel reckons the 22-year-old will be keen to make a strong statement in the Border-Gavaskar trophy after this underwhelming performance in the South Africa series.
“If you see his numbers, when someone performs so well in India, you are eager to see how he performs overseas. You have scored runs in Indian conditions, but if you score runs there as well, you get the stamp of an all-round batter,” Parthiv Patel said during a discussion on Color Cineplex, via Sportskeeda.
India are currently involved in a three-match Test series against New Zealand at home. They have just whitewashed Bangladesh in a two-match assignment. Yashasvi Jaiswal was the leading run-scorer in that series. He struck 189 runs across four innings at an average of 47.25. Parthiv Patel was left impressed after seeing Jaiswal’s rapid improvements in the red-ball format.
“We have seen the improvements in last one year, especially the way he played the short balls against Bangladesh. Although it was only Bangladesh in Chennai, they had pacy bowlers, and he played the short ball very well,” Parthiv Patel said. The former wicketkeeper-batter feels Yashasvi Jaiswal has already gained knowledge about different conditions and is playing his shots accordingly. “If you talk about pedigree, Yashasvi Jaiswal has everything,” he added.
Parthiv Patel hopes to see Yashasvi Jaiswal putting up his A-game in Australia. “The only thing now is that you will get five Test matches in Australia and you just have to make your numbers even better. You have scored 1200 runs (in this WTC cycle), so the expectations will definitely be there,” the cricketer-turned-expert added.
Yashasvi Jaiswal remained the second-highest scorer in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle after England’s Joe Root till Wednesday, October 16. Ben Duckett, however, took up the place with his 114-run knock in the second Test against Pakistan. Jaiswal has aggregated 1217 runs in 11 Tests at a batting average of over 60.
