On This Day In 2007: 'Angry' Yuvraj Singh Took the World by Storm by Hitting Six Sixes in an Over
Yuvraj’s devastating batting took place at Kingsmead in Durban with English fast bowler Stuart Broad finding himself at the receiving end.

One of the finest all-rounders ever to play for India, Yuvraj Singh created history on this day (September 19) in 2007 as he hit six sixes in an over in a T20 World Cup game. Yuvraj’s devastating batting took place at Kingsmead in Durban with English fast bowler Stuart Broad finding himself at the receiving end.

Yuvraj’s on-field carnage unfolded in the 19th over of the India innings. Thanks to his blistering knock, India managed to post a mammoth total of 218 at the loss of four wickets. Yuvraj remained unbeaten producing a scintillating knock of 58 off just 16 balls. Yuvraj completed his half century, facing just 12 balls. His power-packed innings comprised three boundaries and seven maximums.

As fans celebrate Yuvraj Singh’s breathtaking performance today, we take a look at the special over and what led the former India all-rounder unleash his inner beat mode against the English side.

Batting first, India were comfortably placed at 171/3 at the end of the 18th over in the T20 World Cup 2007 Super Eights game against England.

It was around that time former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff attempted to engage Yuvraj Singh in a banter.

It was probably that spat that resulted in Yuvraj’s power-hitting against Stuart Broad. Yuvraj himself later revealed how the six sixes in one over unfolded in Durban.

“Freddie was just being Freddie – he said a few words and I said a few words back,” Yuvraj Singh recalled, as per BBC. “I was just happy the six sixes came against England because I got hit for five sixes by Dimitri Mascarenhas, a few weeks earlier in an ODI. When I hit the sixth six, obviously the first look was at Freddie but the second look was at Dimitri, who gave me a smile,” India’s World Cup-winning all-rounder went on to add.

Indian opening batters —Virender Sehwag (68 off 52 balls) and Gautam Gambhir (58 off 41 deliveries)—scored a half century each to set up a solid foundation for India. The MS Dhoni-led side comfortably crossed the 200-run mark at the end of the 20th over, thanks to Yuvraj Singh’s gutsy batting.

England did enjoy an impressive start to the run chase but failed to hold onto the momentum. The Paul Collingwood-led side fell short of the target by 18 runs. Irfan Pathan claimed three wickets to earn a convincing victory for India.
