Following his stellar start to his international career, Sarfaraz Khan has made a good case for himself to be India’s middle-order batter. Sourav Ganguly shared his thoughts on the young batter’s future.
Speaking in an interview with RevSportz, Ganguly was asked on why Sarfaraz was not retained by the Delhi Capitals franchise. To add some context, the former India skipper was the mentor of the franchise back in 2019 and has now taken up the role of Director of Cricket with the same side.
“No, I think he’s more of a five-day player. His game is suited for that. T20 is a different format. And the amount of runs he scored in domestic cricket, in the Ranji trophy and in first-class cricket has been phenomenal. And as they say, if you score runs, it doesn’t go to waste. And that’s exactly what’s happened to Sarfaraz,” responded Ganguly.

Sarfaraz had made his debut in the IPL for the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the age of 17 years old but despite his move to the Capitals, he was unable to make a mark in the tournament and finds himself uncertain about participating in the upcoming edition as well.
When it comes to red-ball cricket, however, he has been amongst the best batters in the first-class format. This resulted in a good performance on his debut at Rajkot where he went on to score two half-centuries in both innings of the Test to push India to victory.
Along with him, Dhruv Jurel has also been in fine touch with both bat and gloves. He has been able to put up a crucial knock of 90 against England at Ranchi. This proved to be a vital contribution as India went on to win the match and then the series as well.

As the time for the old guard slowly approaches, Sarfaraz is definitely making a strong case for himself to be part of the next set of players to take over for India in the long run.
India will travel to Dharamsala for the final Test against England which will prove to be an inconsequential affair as the Test series is already won by the hosts. The young Indian batter however will be eyeing to put on another good performance and look to establish himself as a starter in the side for the future.
