The Tamil Nadu government on Saturday extended complete lockdown for more one week from May 24 without any relaxation to curb the spread of Covid-19 cases. The decision on lockdown extension was taken in a meeting headed by Chief Minister MK Stalin with a team of medical experts to review the current situation of coronavirus infection in the state.
Speaking at the meeting, Stalin said that the Covid-19 infection rate has come down but still not under control. Raising concerns about the movement of the people in order to buy essential commodities, Stalin said that people are roaming on the streets as if it was a normal holiday.
“We have lost many lives since the Covid-19 infection started. Many frontline staff including doctors have succumbed to the virus. We have to put a stop to this,” the Chief Minister said at the meeting.
Here’s a list of the latest restrictions imposed in Tamil Nadu:
• Vegetables, fruits required by the general public will be provided by the Department of Horticulture in vehicles in Chennai city and in all districts in collaboration with the concerned local bodies and corporation. Standalone grocery shops to be closed during this period.
• Pharmacies or veterinary pharmacies, milk supply, drinking water and daily newspaper distribution will be allowed to operate.
• All the shops are allowed to open on May 22 till 9 pm and May 23 for one day only from 6 am to 9 pm.
• Private and government buses will be allowed to travel on May 22 and May 23.
• School colleges and other educational institutions, places of worship, parks, recreation clubs, zoological parks and sport academies to remain shut.
• Petrol, diesel and other fuel pumps to remain open through the lockdown.
• All government offices other than important ones such as those inside the Secretariat to remain closed; private IT, ITeS offices to remain shut.
• Hotels and lodges to stop accepting patrons for reasons besides medical, other important causes.
• News and media companies can operate as usual.
• Parcel services such as Swiggy and Zomato can pick up orders between 6-10 a.m. during the day, for three hours after noon and between 6-9 p.m. through the day. Restaurants and eateries and tea shops to be completely shut for visitors.
Tamil Nadu on Friday reported 36,184 new Covid-19 cases, with the Chennai’s daily coronavirus count registering a slight decline to 5,913 as against 6,073 the day before. The number of deaths stood at 467, taking the total number of fatalities to 19,598.
The total number of positive cases numbered 17,70,988 and the number of active cases, including those in isolation, stood at 2,74,629. On Friday, 24,478 people were discharged after treatment, taking the total number of recoveries to 14,76,761.
