Indira En Selvam, released in 1962, is a Tamil drama film. Directed by C Padmanaban, the film was released on September 13, thereby completing 61 years of its release. The hit film was produced by S Soundappan and C Chenna Kesavan. It featured Pandari Bai, MR Radha and SA Ashokan in pivotal roles whereas Sumangala played the child artist.
Notably, the film’s script was written by Viruthai Ramasamy and CN Padurangan collaborated with HR Pathmanabha Sastri to compose the music for the film. Suratha, Thamizhaazhagan, VaSuRa, Kovai Kumarathevan and Villiputhan wrote the lyrics for the film and singers PB Srinivas, SC Krishnan, AL Raghavan, (Radha) Jayalakshmi, K Rani, Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi, Soolamangalam Jayalakshmi along with AG Rathnamala crooned the songs for the film.
The story of the film revolves around a girl named Indira and nurse Susheela. The woman-centric film starts with Indira who is an orphan. Her mother Prabha died at the time of her birth and Susheela took it upon herself to give Indira a good upbringing. The compassionate nurse Susheela looks after Indira but Dr Karunamurthy creates problems for her. He sexually molests the nurse due to which she moves to another town and enrolls Indira in a boarding school where she is taken care of as an orphan.
Meanwhile, Karunamurthy learns about Susheela’s whereabouts and starts threatening her. The story, then, proceeds to show how the protagonist overcomes and deals with the situation with the help of her boyfriend Shekhar, a doctor.
The story of Indira En Selvam is woven around Pandari Bai who has played Susheela in the film. Sumangala played little Indira and received widespread applause for the same. Moreover, MR Radha is believed to have outshone everyone with his amazing performance as a villain whereas Asokan as Doctor Shekhar is decent.
The movie, apart from the storyline, also became popular for its tracks.
