New Delhi: Outsourcing has become a dirty word in the US as a majority of Americans are not in favour of it as they believe it would lead to job losses at home, according to a multi-nation survey done by a leading US think tank.

"Outsourcing has become a dirty word in the US. The Americans are not happy with this aspect of globalisation that has increased their job insecurity," Chicago Council on Global Affairs president Marshall Bouton said here Thursday at a seminar on "The Rise of India and China: its implications on the US".

"Americans think Mexico, India and especially China practise unfair trade with the United States," Bouton said while discussing the findings of the survey.

According to the survey based on extensive field studies in India, the US and China, while a majority of the Americans see India and China emerging as economic rivals, most of the Indians see India and China as partners in the long run, he added.

The possibility of China and India emerging as competitors in the long-term cannot be ruled out, as there are indications that China was trying to catch up with India in the IT sector, Bouton said.

However, a majority of Americans and Indians see China also as a potential source of conflict in the South Asian region due to its growing military might, he said.

Bouton said contrary to the common perception, most of the Americans do not think India as a technology leader. The general perception about India is that it is proving to be a major impediment in the globalisation of trade due to its stubborn stand on certain issues in World Trade Organisation.
