Northern Railway has made its place in Zone No 1 by selling scrap worth Rs 101.11 crore in the financial year 2024-25. Deepak Kumar, Chief Public Relations Officer of the Northern Railway has informed about this in an interview. Railways collect the scrap matter from tracks, pre-stressed concrete sleepers, and Rail gauge rods. They sell it to earn money and spend it on safety requirements. Besides these things, the Northern Railways have also started the efficient disposal of staff quarters, cabins, sheds and water tanks. The discarding of scrap PSC sleepers accumulated in large numbers on the Northern Railway is being expedited. This is being done to generate revenue as well as clearing up valuable land for railway activities. PSC Sleepers are the 2nd most expensive track component after rails with the longest surviving track component. The shelf life of these tracks is 40-50 years. Apart from amassing funds, the discarding of scrap material also serves the purpose of misuse by anti-social elements.

In 2021, the Northern Railway earned Rs 85.45 crore after selling scrap till July 28. This is an increase of Rs 42.26 crore compared to the revenue generated from selling scrap in 2020 when it earned Rs 42.19 crore. The Ministry of Railways had set different targets for all the zones to earn revenue from the selling of scrap materials. A target of Rs 370 crore was set for Northern Railways. Every zone of the Indian Railways worked to make better use of resources by collecting scrap material and selling it through e-auctions.

Ashutosh Gangal, General Manager of Northern Railway, said in an interview that the services were affected due to the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic. Despite this, Northern Railway has generated more revenue of Rs 85.45 crore in 2021, he said. Highlighting the efforts of Northern Railways amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, he said, “Northern Railway has been able to maintain the supply of all essential medicines, injections and other materials uninterruptedly amid Covid-19 pandemic. Every effort has been made to ensure uninterrupted availability of Liquid Oxygen by coordinating with the State Governments and suppliers.”

He further added that e-auction of the scrap is proving to be cost-effective.
