Ever since Karan Johar launched Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan in Student of the Year, people have raised their eyebrows at him for lending extra support to star kids. Karan has always been vocal about his affection for star kids like Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Ananya Panday and Janhvi Kapoor. Recently, the filmmaker flipped the nepotism debate on the audience.
Karan said at a Forbes event, “When you look at a film set, if you go by sheer data, on a film set if there are 500 people, I can assure you 490 of those people are not from the business at all. They have nothing to do with the business. Ten people are and then you make such a hue and cry about them. What about the other 490 people?”

The filmmaker added, “Similarly, in my office, if you walk in, we’re about 600 to 800 people working at one point of time on multiple projects. Ninety-five per cent of those people are not from the movie industry. Not technicians, actors, technical teams, all forms of artists are not. But that tiny percentage of star kids that have made into this big big deal about. What about that other kind of actors and directors who are not from the business and doing such incredible work? Why aren’t you giving them the importance they truly deserve?”
During a recent event, Rana Daggubatti engaged in a playful rapid-fire session with Karan Johar and asked him to name his favourite kid. Karan Johar jokingly asked if he had to choose between Roohi and Yash. Rana clarified that he was referring to Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt. “Let me do some mental mathematics and say, Alia… It’s just a safer answer for me to give you right now,” Karan said.
