It will soon be a year since the nationwide lockdown was imposed and while the pandemic disrupted the discourse of jobs and hiring all through 2020, a few upticks across different sectors indicate that we may be on the road to recovery.
A Monster.com report on the employment Index for the month of February has shown a growth of 6% in job posting activity. And even though this is a significant drop of 15% when compared on a year-on-year basis, it goes on to show that the jobs market is not completely in the doldrums. Cities like Ahmedabad have shown a 17% increase whereas Bengaluru has shown an overall growth of 10% compared to January 2021.
Hiring demand in the IT – Hardware, Software sectors in cities like Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai has seen an uptrend. While Hyderabad grew at 15%, Bengaluru and Chennai saw an increase of 14% and 11% respectively.
It is no surprise that the IT sector is witnessing an uptrend, says Rituaprna Chakraborty, co-founder & EVP, Teamlease Services. According to her, the IT industry has been a beneficiary of the pandemic.
“The moment companies realised that location is no longer a barrier, they start to benefit. There is a huge cross-pollination taking place, but there has always been a clustering of such jobs towards the southern states. There is now demand for niche jobs like data analysis, Artificial Intelligence within IT. This is not only a demand showed by the West but also from our domestic sector, ” she said.
The report also goes on to show that the hiring momentum is across different experience levels. While freshers with 0 to 3 years of experience have seen a 6% growth, those with 7 to 10 years or middle management has also seen a 9% uptick. In fact, a Y-o-Y comparison for postings of people with above 15 years of experience has grown by 19%.
“Sectors such as IT and telecom, alongside agro-based industries and media and entertainment continue to do well while it is industries like Travel and tourism which still face their set of challenges,” said Sekhar Garisa, CEO, Monster.com.
“However, there has been improvement from where it was during the onset of the pandemic. With the Covid vaccine roll-out being initiated, and as India gears up to be workplace-ready, we can hope for improvements and new opportunities to open up in the coming months,” Garisa added.
