In 2017, when Maruti Suzuki introduced the 3-door Jimny, it created quite a buzz among local car enthusiasts in India. However, the company decided not to release it in the Indian market, opting instead to develop a more practical 5-door version, thinking it would be a better fit for Indian consumers.
However, the longer variant has attracted substantial attention from international markets such as Africa, South America, and Japan.
Reacting to the exciting news during a media interaction in Delhi, the company’s Chief Technology Officer C V Raman said “The 5-door Jimny will also be launched in Japan, but in some time.”
India is currently the manufacturing hub for both left- and right-hand drive 5-door Jimnys. The country recently exported its first batch of these popular vehicles to the world. Initially, the Indian plant focused on making the 3-door version, but it has since shifted its focus to exclusively producing the 5-door model.
However, Raman assures that the plant can still churn out the 3-door variant when needed.
While the Jimny gears up for its grand debut at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show, it appears that Europe might miss out on both the 3-door and 5-door models. This unfortunate situation arises from stringent emissions regulations in the European Union.
Maruti Suzuki’s 5-door Jimny is set to take the world by storm, and its Indian origins are an essential part of this global success story.
