Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is facing delays of up to 2 hours due to faulty Air traffic radar automation system, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) said on Thursday.

According to a Moneycontrol report, the officials noted that the air traffic radar automation system at Mumbai airport was down between 3:00 pm-5:15 pm and added that air passenger traffic would be restored in a few hours.

This is not the first time a fault has been reported in the automation system at Mumbai Airport. It has seen glitches and failures in the recent past. The system faced more than 70 problems in June 2022.

In 2023, the Air Traffic Controllers Guild had written a letter to the Airports Authority of India and MoCA stating that the Air traffic radar automation system at the airport was old.

The hardware for the current automation system is over 18 years old; while the lifespan of the system is estimated to be 10 years, the letter said, according to a Moneycontrol report.
