According to mythology, at the time of creation, Lord Brahma had divided his body into two parts. From his right side, man was born, and from his left side, nature was born. After this, nature divided itself into six parts. The sixth part of Prakriti Devi was called Shashthi Devi. Shashthi Devi is called Chhath Devi.

Whose wife is Chhath Maiya?

Dr. Shripati Tripathi said that according to the Puranas, the name of Chhath Maiya’s husband is Kartikeya. He is the son of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, and he is also the brother of Lord Ganesha. According to Shrimad Bhagwat Mahapuran, among the 16 mothers who appeared from the sixth part of nature, the most famous is Chhath Maiya, who is the wife of Kartikeya.

Rituals Involved in Chhath Puja:

Chhath is a four-day festival.

Day 1 Nahay Khay: The first days of the Chhath Puja involved devotees taking a dip, preferably in any river or pond.

Day 2 Lohanda or Kharna: The second day of Chhath Puja involved devotees fasting the whole day, and the fast ended a little later, after sunset.

Day 3 Sandhya Arghya (evening offerings): The third day of Chhath Puja is also observed with a fast without water, and the entire day involves preparing puja offerings.

Day 4 Bihaniya Arghya: On the final day of Chhath Puja, worshippers again gather beside a river or a water body, and then offer prayers and prasad to the sun god. After the offerings are done, the devotees break their fast.
