Shubman Gill, who stayed back in Chennai to continue with his treatment and recovery, is all set to fly to Ahmedabad today.
“Gill will be travelling to Ahmedabad from Chennai today in a commercial flight. He will continue with recovery and rest there, under the watch of BCCI medical team,” a source close to developments tells CricketNext.

The 24-year-old is recovering from dengue and showing encouraging signs of returning to action soon. The Indian team management, currently in Delhi for the fixture vs Afghanistan, continues to keep a tab on the youngster.
As CricketNext had reported on October 10, Gill was hospitalised in Chennai after his platelets fell below 1,00,000 per microliter but was discharged in a day and continued getting treatment in the hotel. Gill’s hospitalisation was also confirmed by India batting coach Vikram Rathour during the pre-match presser in Delhi on October 10.
“He is recovering well. He was hospitalised, yes, but that was more as a precaution. He is back in the hotel; he is recovering well. So, being monitored by the medical team and whatever update we get, we hope he will recover pretty soon. He is looking good actually,” says Rathour.
The coach further added that “hopefully Gill will be back in the mix pretty soon”.
Rathour’s optimistic comments and development of Gill flying to Ahmedabad is finally some good news for the Indian cricket team but getting match ready will be an uphill climb for the Indian opener. The youngster’s vital signs are showing improvement but it will be difficult to put a date against his return at this stage.
“Gill’s vital signs are improving and he is on the right path of recovery – 70-80% recovered. Difficult to say when he will return but things are looking good,” says the source.
Gill has already missed two 2023 World Cup contests – vs Australia and Afghanistan – and is in a race against time to be match-ready for the high-octane clash vs Pakistan. The return for the Pakistan match is unlikely at this stage and the Indian team management will continue to play the waiting game.
“Shubman Gill will be given all the time to recover and regain match fitness. There is no thought of seeking or discussing replacements at this stage as the management considers him a vital cog in the set-up. Gill is already showing positive signs and is likely to make a return soon,” a senior BCCI official told News18 CricketNext.
Like Australia, who are carrying an injured Travis Head in their squad, India will follow a similar approach with Gill and allow him all the time he needs to get match-ready.
“Look at what Australia are doing with Travis Head. He is injured but they haven’t ruled him out or sought a replacement. Every chance right now is given to Head to make that return. India too are likely to follow a similar approach when it comes to Gill. He has been our one of the most consistent performers in the last year or so,” added the official.
