A Taiwanese man has been granted a divorce after his wife demanded payment for sex and conversations, according to local reports. The man, identified only as Hao, filed for divorce after his wife, known as Xuan, began charging him a fee for intimacy and communication.
The couple, who married in 2014 and have two children, faced escalating issues in their relationship over the years, according to South China Morning Post (SCMP). Hao first sought a divorce in 2021 when Xuan began charging him USD 15 (approximately Rs 1,200) each time he wanted to have sex or even speak with her. According to SCMP, he withdrew the lawsuit after Xuan promised to work on their marriage.
At that time, Hao even transferred property ownership to her name. However, the couple’s relationship continued to deteriorate. Xuan’s refusal to have sex and her emotional abuse led Hao to refile for divorce this year. By then, the couple had not spoken directly for two years and communicated only through a messaging app. Despite attempts at marriage counseling, their issues persisted.
A court in Taiwan recently granted Hao’s divorce, saying that the relationship was “cold and difficult to fix.” Xuan, who opposed the separation, appealed the decision to a higher court, but her appeal was denied. This case highlights a troubling trend in Taiwan, where similar cases have been reported.
Taiwan has one of the highest divorce rates in Asia, with a reported rate of 0.128% last year. In one instance from 2014, a wife charged her husband USD 60 for sex and set fees for conversations and meals, citing his lack of financial contribution. This led the couple’s children to also demand payment from their father for communication.
