Bhadraj Temple is located on a hilltop near Mussoorie and Dehradun.

A video of a local tossing away footwear left by tourists, who visited the Bhadraj Temple in Dehradun, is going viral on Instagram. In the short clip, it appears the man threw shoes and slippers over the temple boundary, and down the hills.

The text on the video read, “This is what happens when outsiders visit our sacred place and, despite clear instructions, still bring their shoes and slippers inside the temple. Dear visitors, please respect our customs and traditions. Do not violate the sanctity of our land and nature.”

This video has led to strong reactions, with many criticising the man for being too harsh and polluting nature. An Instagram user commented, “So, you throw those plastic-infused shoes on the hills and expect an unpolluted environment. This is the same as puncturing tyres of vehicles standing in front of your house. Can there be a better way of dealing with this nuisance?”

Another person wrote, “This guy is destroying the very nature the temple is built on. Instead, he should have put all the slippers into a gunny bag and would have thrown it elsewhere.”

Someone suggested the temple authorities should build a dedicated shoe rack for devotees to keep their shoes. Making this point an Instagram user wrote, “Can’t there be a shoe rack facility from donated money instead of throwing garbage (shoes here) among trees.”

However, many also applauded the man for taking firm action. An Instagram user wrote, “Same should be done in Tapkeshwar temple. People are so disrespectful and throw their shoes anywhere even though there is a designated space for it, they are not ready to give 10 rupees for it. Absolutely shameful.”

The Bhadraj Temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna’s brother Lord Balram. Since it is on a hilltop, devotees have to go on a long trek to reach it. According to India Hikes, the trek from Library End in Mussoorie to the Bhadraj Temple is about 12 kilometres.
