It is common to have distinct habits. A recent show of TLC titled My Strange Addiction unveils such peculiar human behaviours. The show depicted a man who seems to be emotionally attached to his inflatable toys and a woman who seeks pleasure in consuming beauty products. But the final episode sets the stage and highlights the story of a tattoo artist who loves drinking a litre of blood daily. A 29-year-old woman from Lancaster, California, named Michelle has been drinking the blood of a pig since she was a teenager. Recently, she expressed that she is addicted to blood and does not feel content without having it. “Drinking it makes me feel energised,” she shared. She sometimes drinks it straight from a glass or mixes it in her meals.
During her appearance on the show, she said, “For me, blood is equally important as water.” She further said, “I like to drink blood while reading, relaxing, watching TV, or painting. There’s never a bad time for me to have some”. Every morning, she mixes blood with her coffee. Michelle says that not all blood is the same. She likes pig’s blood over cow’s blood.
“I’d choose human blood over animal blood any day, but I don’t label myself as a vampire. I’m just someone who likes blood.” Her addiction began during her teenage years while struggling with depression, leading to self-harm. Despite claiming she has ceased self-mutilation, the addiction persists.
While lots of people might be grossed out by the idea, Michelle says that drinking blood is a lot like enjoying wine. “It feels the same,” she says. Instead of finding the taste gross, she finds it comforting. “When it goes down my throat, it’s like having a cold and drinking a hot toddy.”
If Michelle doesn’t have her daily dose, she says, “I get irritable, I get angry, I don’t want to leave my house – I want my blood.” Over the past ten years, she calculates consuming approximately 1,000 gallons of blood.
Michelle’s episode on the season finale of My Strange Addiction aired on TLC.
