Meet Mariam Nabantanzo, The Mama Uganda Who Gave Birth To 44 Children
It took years for Mariam to understand why she repeatedly gave birth to multiple children at once.

For many married women, the experience of motherhood is considered one of the most joyful events in their lives, despite the significant pain involved in childbirth. After hearing the story of a woman from Uganda, one might question whether this is true for everyone. Mariam Nabantanzi, a woman from Uganda, has given birth to 44 children despite having only 15 pregnancies. Adding to her challenges, her husband has left her, leaving her to care for her children alone. At 43 years old, Mariam is now raising 38 of her children by herself, as 6 of them have passed away. She is known as “Mama Uganda” in her home country.

Mariam was born on December 25, 1980. It is said that her mother abandoned her and her five brothers just three days after Mariam’s birth. Following this, Mariam’s father remarried. Tragically, her stepmother laced the food with glass, leading to the deaths of all five of her brothers. Mariam survived because she was at a relative’s house at the time. Her life did not improve; at the age of 12, her family sold her under the pretence of marriage. Mariam gave birth to her first child at 13 and went on to have 44 children by the time she was 36. Sadly, 6 of these children passed away, leaving her with 38 surviving children—20 boys and 18 girls.

Mariam, who has gained international recognition as Mama Uganda, has an eldest child who is 31 years old and the youngest child who is 6. She continued to conceive until 40, ultimately giving birth to 44 children. A few years ago, however, her husband disappeared, taking all their money with him, leaving Mariam to care for the entire family on her own. Despite only being pregnant 15 times, Mariam gave birth to 44 children. Data reveals that she gave birth to four children on five separate occasions, three children on another five occasions, twins four times, and a single child once. Mariam is not only known as Mama Uganda but is also recognized as the most fertile woman in the world.

It took years for Mariam to understand why she repeatedly gave birth to multiple children at once. Confused and worried, she consulted a doctor, who discovered that her ovaries were significantly larger than those of typical women—a rare condition known as hyperovulation. The doctors informed her that surgery to prevent further pregnancies would be ineffective. Recently, Drew Binsky, a well-known YouTuber who travels the world, visited Uganda to learn more about Mariam’s extraordinary family. He expressed his astonishment at seeing Mariam raise her children alone, describing it as remarkable.
