In India, discussion about food preferences can often spark passionate debates. Recently, a surprising entry made waves in the world of Indian gastronomy – Aloo Baingan, a traditional curry dish featuring potatoes and eggplant, has found itself on the list of the ‘Worst-rated foods in the World’ by TasteAtlas.

TasteAtlas, an online culinary guide, ranked Aloo Baingan at number 60, describing it as a “simple and flavorful” dish that is a popular lunch item in Northern India, commonly packed in lunchboxes. Despite its apparent popularity, the dish received a rating of 2.7 out of 5, leaving many Indians on social media bewildered and questioning the basis of such a low rating.

Now, there’s another reason for laughter associated with baingan, following the chuckles elicited by a viral meme. In this meme, a reporter queried a school student about their favourite subject, only to receive the unexpected response of “baingan.”

Aloo Baingan, a classic Indian curry, is prepared with potatoes, brinjal, onions, tomatoes, ginger-garlic paste, an array of spices, and a finishing touch of coriander leaves. The combination of these ingredients creates a dish that is not only nutritious but also versatile, forming a staple in many households.

Prabhjot Singh, a member of the food blogging group Foodkars, told Hindustan Times, “All I can say is that the king is heartbroken.” Referring to brinjal as the king of vegetables, Singh emphasized its widespread presence in North Indian cuisine. He urged the TasteAtlas jury to visit India and experience the authentic taste of Aloo Baingan in local dhabas, restaurants and hotels.

In contrast, the top position on the list of the worst-rated foods was claimed by Hakarl from Iceland. This dish, made from cured shark meat undergoing a three-month fermentation process, boasts a pungent taste and is served with a local spirit called brennivin. Despite being a beloved national delicacy in Iceland, tourists often find the ammonia content overwhelming, causing discomfort and earning it the title of the worst-rated food.

Securing the title of the second worst-rated food is the unconventional creation from the United States – ramen noodles crafted into a burger, featuring a ramen noodle bun filled with a meat patty.
