Save Fuel Money, Live Walking Assistance And More: Top Google Maps Features Coming To India In 2024
Google Maps users in India are different and the company is bringing more India-first features, and others that can help you save money. Find out here.

Google Maps is ubiquitous with billions of users in India and you can question Google’s strategy to keep its app at the forefront but it is the go-to navigation app. But the platform tends to desert its users in the country by giving most of the shiny features for other countries like the UK and Europe. Google wants to change that image now and bring more features that you might have come across the company’s unveiling for other markets.

Maps has got a new colour tone which has got a mixed response from people, but as they say, change is inevitable, and in Maps’ case, it comes more than a decade later. Google Maps has announced some interesting features that not only have the Western effect but a fusion of local flavours give them an exciting outlook. Here are the top Maps features coming to Android users in India in 2024.

New Google Maps Features Coming To India In 2024

Of Course, More India-First Features

Most people here like to guide people to their place using landmarks, which could be a temple, ATM or even a small grocery shop. Google realises this habit and wants to give this as a feature on Maps called Address descriptors. “Using a combination of machine learning signals Google Maps will automatically find up to five of the most relevant landmarks and area names around your pinned address, and display the landmark reference when you share your location," Google explained in its post here.

As you can imagine, Maps is using AI to determine the five possible landmark areas that can be shared with your friend when they come visiting and need your location. The feature will be rolling out across India in January.

It is surprising that Google has taken so long to bring this option here but it’s finally here and we feel it makes more sense than the other features that Google has tested.

Power Of Lens In Maps

Lens is a powerful visual tool that has been available on Chrome, Search and more. Now, users in India will have its capability on Maps. “Simply point your camera down the street and you will instantly see nearby restaurants and cafes, as well as useful information like opening hours, ratings, reviews and photos," the blog post adds. Lens means Google is optimising its Street View features in the country and directing people to different stores, cafes with details is a clear upgrade on the existing options for millions. Google is bringing Lens to Maps in 15 cities by January 2024, starting with Android users.

Save Fuel Money With This Trick On Maps

You might have heard that Maps helps people save money while travelling, and Google is bringing this feature for users in India. The company is using AI to track the traffic in real time, and also see the kind of roads you will be taking, which includes flyovers that take more out of the car or bike to help you save fuel.

“For example, hybrid and electric vehicles perform better in stop-and-go traffic, while diesel engines use less fuel at higher speeds. This helps save fuel and encourage sustainable route choices, without significantly impacting travel time," Google highlights its purpose. The good thing about this feature in India is that Maps will be compatible with cars and bikes, which is crucial for one of the biggest two-wheeler markets in the world. Once again, expect the feature to roll out in January.

Virtual Live Walk With Maps

Another integration of Street View is made possible in live view walking which basically means you can virtually get navigation steps from Maps while walking on the street. You will get arrows on the phone’s screen telling when to take a turn, and even vibrate to get your attention. Google says it is also using AI and AR tech to bring this live walking feature, which is coming to 3000 cities using Android phones in the coming months.
