In a bid to make your mobile phone an effective tool for self-protection, especially for women, the government has said that no device without panic button will be sold from next year. The government has issued a gazette notification announcing this.
This follows a similar move for one emergency '112' number for availing services of police, ambulance and fire department.
Here are 6 things that, we think, you should know about this new initiative:
1. From January 1, 2017, every mobile phone to be sold in India must have the facility of a panic button.
2. The phones can come with a dedicated physical panic button.
3. Feature phones without any dedicated panic button will be required to invoke emergency call on pressing numeric key 5 or 9.
4. In smartphones, the power button when short pressed thrice in quick succession will trigger the panic feature.
5. On using this feature, distress signals will be sent to the nearest police control room with your location details. It will also alert 10 close contacts stored in the phone.
6. It will also be prohibited to sell mobile phones without GPS effective January 1, 2018.
