Chinese technology giant Lenovo has confirmed that it has fired “hundreds of employees at Motorola”, according to a report by technology blog Droid Life. The exact number of employees who were handed pink slips is yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, Lenovo in its official statement said that the “resource action impacts less than two percent of its approximately 55,000 employees globally.” This puts the number to less than 1,100 employees. The Droid Life report highlighted that the “resource action” majorly affects Motorola.

The report stated that over half the employees at Motorola (owned by Lenovo)were shown thedoor, of the remaining 1200.

Citing reasons for the massive layoff round, Lenovo in its statement said, “The majority of the positions being eliminated are part of the ongoing strategic integration between Lenovo and its Motorola smartphone business as the company further aligns its organization and streamlines its product portfolio to best compete in the global smartphone market.”

Lenovo also said that it is “making adjustments in other areas of the business as part of a continued effort to manage costs, drive efficiency and support ongoing improvement in overall financial performance.”

Lenovo also confirmed that it is going to continue “to maintain the Motorola Mobility headquarters at Chicago.”
