Legion is the group which takes pride in hacking the verified Twitter accounts of prominent figures including Rahul Gandhi, Vijay Mallya, Barkha Dutt and Ravish Kumar.
One of the members of the group called “Legion Crew” described as “a young man sitting… somewhere in a room in India, smoking copious amounts of marijuana” by The Washington Post, spoke to Max Bearak on a secure messaging platform, to reveal its motives.
Here are some straightforward answers provided by the Legion Crew member to Bearak of The Washington Post.
Bearak states that the Legion member was “friendly but provocative” during the chat and “he was coy, too, about having any political motives.”Also read: Cyware Unveils Cybersecurity Tips in Five Indian LanguagesIs there any political motive behind the Twitter account hacks?
The report mentioned that the group was “uninterested in political data” at the start. However, after acquiring “several terabytes of raw data concerning all sorts of interests”, the group discovered data (in gigabytes) related to prominent Indian figures.
“The data was choosing the targets for them, not the other way around,” the report summarised. Also read: How Twitter Accounts of Rahul Gandhi And Congress May Have Been HackedWhy is Legion doing this?
If the member is to be believed, the group aims to make huge data available to the public. “Whatever they were finding, they aimed to release,” Bearak wrote. How are they selecting targets?
Of course, there is no clear answer to that. “One clear motive for releasing some of the data is disdain for the targets,” report points out. “The root of the disdain may partly derive from a sort of technological superiority complex, too.”
The member also mocked Vijay Mallya for keeping bank login details in his unencrypted private email. Also read: Don't Be a Victim of Twitter Hack: Here's How to Keep Your Account SafeWho is the next target?
The Legion Crew warned businessman Lalit Modi while stating “individual targets were just an appetiser.” The member claimed that the group had access to servers of Apollo Hospitals and “had their sights set on bigger things” and not just individuals.
The group has also warned Sansad.nic.in domain. “Next is a dump of sansad.nic.in emails…Which is – quite big, It includes a lot of _BIG FISH_,” online magazine FactorDaily quoted one of the Legion hackers as saying.
Interestingly, the member is more into drugs and music than hacking. He also told Bearak that he dislikes staying in New Delhi and might travel to Russia. Also read: Congress Takes Down 200 Twitter Accounts After Hacking Attack
