New Delhi: After introducing the USB Type-C port for charging and output in its MacBook, Apple is reportedly working on a new type of headphone connector that could help make its future iPhones thinner.
The tech giant has filed a patent at the US Patent and Trademark Office for a ‘D-shaped connector’ that would replace the current 3.5mm and 2.5mm jack standards and offer a thinner and shorter alternative.
The new type of connector would include the same functionality as the modern 3.5mm TRRS connector (tip, ring, ring, sleeve), but its overall design will be trimmed down to be better accommodated into extremely thin devices, Apple Insider notes.
The only feature that would make the new connector different from current standards is its shape. With a ‘D’ profile, the new connector will have one flat side that will be compatible with a matching D-shaped cavity with an internal mechanism that could either be mechanical or magnetic. It would be backed by a flat cable. Some embodiments describe a diameter of 2.0mm from the plug’s flat portion to its opposite edge.
Leveraging the invention, Apple could also introduce a Lightning-connected headphone. If introduced, the technology might see the extinction of the older standards and bring substantive reduction in overall profiles of the future smartphones.
