MG Ramachandran, widely known as MGR, was a revered Indian actor, director, politician, and philanthropist, primarily celebrated for his illustrious career in the Tamil film industry. Making his acting debut in Ellis R Dungan’s Sathi Leelavathi in 1936, MGR went on to portray versatile roles throughout his career, earning the admiration of millions. His collaboration with the accomplished director Thimatchipuram Rajagopal Raghunath, or TR Raghunath, spanned over 30 movies, showcasing their successful cinematic partnership. Interestingly, one of their collaborative works carried two titles.
TR Raghunath, the younger brother of renowned director Raja Chandrasekhar, started his career as an assistant director in Gnanasoundari. His journey also included serving as a sound recordist for Dhara Sasangam in 1936. In 1941, TR Raghunath directed a film titled Vedavathi Alladhu Seetha Jananam, which translates to The Birth of Vedavathi or Sita. This Tamil Hindu mythological movie delved into the Ramayana, depicting key events such as Sita and Lord Rama’s marriage, their exile to the forest, Ravana’s abduction of Sita, her steadfast wait for Lord Rama’s rescue, the epic battle between Rama and Ravana, and Sita’s eventual return.
The cast featured M. R. Krishnamoorthy, K. Thavamani Devi, R. Balasubramaniam, and M. G. Ramachandran, among others. Produced by Raja Chandrasekar, the movie marked the early era of Tamil cinema, often adopting the two-way system from stage dramas, which frequently featured a main title and an alternate one. This tradition was mirrored in cinema, and Vedavathi Alladhu Seetha Jananam was no exception, carrying two titles.
Released on January 11, 1941, the film has surpassed 83 years. Unfortunately, no surviving copies of this cinematic treasure are currently available, leaving its legacy preserved in the annals of Tamil film history. MGR’s collaboration with TR Raghunath in this mythological epic stands as an example of their contributions to the golden era of Tamil cinema.
