Social media is buzzing with controversy after writer-critic B Jeyamohan’s latest blog post on the Malayalam film Manjummel Boys went viral. Jeyamohan made sweeping statements and derogatory remarks about Malayalis, sparking a strong backlash from online users. Despite this, the film made good numbers at the box office. Manjummel Boys revolves around a group of friends facing unforeseen mishaps during a vacation journey to Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, India. Now, Malayalam filmmaker B Unnikrishnan strongly criticised Jeyamohan’s negative remarks on Manjummel Boys. He said that holding hatred towards people is not right. Unnikrishnan mentioned that Jeyamohan called the characters in the film drunken and stingy pickpockets, mentioning that it is wrong to hate pickpockets without considering basic human values.

In a Facebook post, Unnikrishnan highlighted that the film highlights the importance of love and rejects criticisms from detractors like Jeyamohan.

“I just found out about your thoughts on Manjummal Boys. Since I can’t read Tamil, I relied on a news report to understand. I hope I got it right. As a Malayali who admires your work, I want to say we appreciate your writing regardless of any science or politics involved. We don’t criticise you based on that", Unnikrishnan said.

Jeyamohan’s remarks about Malayalam cinema have caused a stir, with many criticising the remarks as hateful. He refuses to compare Malayalam cinema to others. Critics ask Jeyamohan to explain his claim that Malayalam cinema focuses on drug-addicted youth. They suggest Jeyamohan needs to explain his remark before they can see him as a champion.

The speaker accuses the subject of supporting violence and becoming a fascist. They laugh at the tale of a high court lawyer cleaning broken liquor bottles in Vagamon Hills. But they believe the movie is about human love. They urge punishment and greed to be set aside and advocate for celebrating camaraderie, stating that love is their religion.

Jeyamohan criticised Manjummel Boys, calling it a disturbing film that reflects reality instead of fiction. He says tourists from Kerala drink excessively, vomit, stumble, and lack common sense or social awareness. He also claims Malayali alcoholics misbehave in public, vomit and break bottles.
