New Delhi: The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Wednesday said that it will not vote in favour of the government on FDI in retail. Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Aggarwal said, "We won't vote in the Rajya Sabha in favour of the government. We won't make our stand clear on walking out."
Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Wednesday had alleged that the government has neglected the interest of farmers and small traders by deciding on FDI. Samajwadi Party MPs staged a walkout of the Lok Sabha ahead of the voting on the motion. "We walked out because the government has neglected the interest of farmers and small traders," Mulayam said.
Expressing concern over the fate of farmers and small traders after FDI in retail, Yadav said the "interest of five crore small traders and 20 crore farmers and their families were sacrificed by the government's decision. That is why we have walked out."
A day after the UPA won the vote on FDI in retail in Lok Sabha, the UPA faces a tougher test now as the government is not in majority in the Upper House. The government is banking heavily on the support of the BSP and smaller parties.
The BJP has also accused the government of provoking its allies to disrupt proceedings - suggesting a tacit understanding between them and the UPA to prevent the vote. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Thursday suggested that the government is attempting match fixing.
