Kolkata: Celebrations across his home state West Bengal marked the victory of Pranab Mukherjee as the 13th President of the country and the first from Bengal.
Congress workers and common people played with traditional green gulal in joy, while special illuminations were arranged to mark Mukherjee's win in the Presidential poll.
A jubilant Congress distributed sweets and burst crackers in celebration of Sunday's win, which marked the over four decade-long journey of a boy from an unknown village in West Bengal to Raisina Hill. It also marked the end of Mukherjee's life in active politics.
Announcing Mukherjee's win at the state party headquarters in Kolkata, WBPCC president Pradip Bhattacharya said, "As Congressmen we are happy along with the people of the state in this golden moment. We congratulate all those political parties who extended their support despite political differences."
"I welcome all political parties to participate in the celebrations statewide ... We hope to get his valuable advise on occasions," said the WBPCC president, a post which Mukherjee held several times.
Congress leaders and workers from different corners of the state attended the celebrations at the WBPCC office, where Mukherjee's portraits were put up.
Celebrations were also reported from the district Congress offices.
