New Delhi: In yet another move to woo voters, the Union government has decided to fully fund the pre-matriculation scholarships for minority students. Earlier, Centre sponsored the scholarships only partially.
Minority Affairs Minister Rahman Khan informed about the latest offering by the government on Wednesday.
Last year in May, Supreme Court had declined to stay the scheme after the Gujarat government objected to the proposal calling it discriminatory. The Centre's scheme, applicable in all states, is for students belonging to five religious minorities whose parents earn less than Rs 1 lakh annually.
Currently, the Central government pays for 75 per cent of the scholarship amount and states are expected to pick up 25 per cent of the tab.
